A Nigerian female Pastor, Esther Ibanga, who has campaigned against Boko Haram was awarded a Japanese peace prize worth $170,000 which is about N34million on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
Over the years, the mother of two has openly condemned the incessant killings and kidnappings in the Nothern parts of Nigeria which includes Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe States, as well as some villages close to the border between Nigeria and Cameroon by members of Boko Haram.
According to Daily Mail, the Niwano Peace Foundation, awarded her its 20 million Yen annual prize because of the way she has tirelessly pressured central and local governing officials in her efforts to fight back against extremists.
“Esther has worked extensively to foster and facilitate reconciliation between conflicting religious and tribal groups, setting up an organization that has all tribal women leaders on its membership” the Buddhist group-backed foundation said.
The annual Prize is usually given to honor and encourage those who devotes themselves to interreligious cooperation in the pursuit for peace worldwide.
Ibanga is also the founder of a non governmental organisation known as Women Without Walls Initiative (WOWWI), which promotes the rights of women and children while using a non-violent approach to conflict resolution in Nigeria.
