FORMER Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh, believes Nigerian clubs’ failure in the CAF Champions League and other continental engagements is down to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), its affiliate body, League Management Company (LMC) and club owners’ refusal to harmonize the kick off date of the Premier League with that of other countries.
Obuh opines that teams like Enyimba of Aba and Kano Pillars, who flew Nigeria’s flag at the CAF Champions League, would not have been booted out early in the championship if they had enough time to prepare for the competition.
According to Obuh, the late commencement of the league did not help the teams’ on the continent, saying that those administering football in the country have not been supporting the clubs in preparing for continental engagements.
He pleaded with the LMC and club owners to fashion a league timetable that would aid the clubs’ preparation for CAF championships, saying that it would also help the coaches to assess their teams before taking them to the continent.
“One of the problems facing Nigerian clubs in continental engagements is that there is no permanent timetable for the league. This affects the clubs negatively because when the CAF Champions League kick offs you find out that the teams have not gotten their rhythm.
Since most of the clubs don’t have money to play quality friendly matches before the CAF championships, the only way they can prepare is by playing in the league,” he said.
