People Are Petitioning To Take Away Iggy Azalea’s Billboard Award

Although Iggy Azeala seemingly won her Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Song fair and square, people are trying to take it away from her. Ten days after she took the trophy home, a Change.orgpetition has sprouted up online, saying she was ineligible for the prize.
Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, and Bobby Shurmda were also nominated for Top Rap Song, which Iggy won for “Fancy” with Charli XCX. The petition says “The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. ’Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting.”

However, a spokesperson for Billboard Music Awards’ production company, Dick Clark Productions, has said that it doesn’t matter when the song was released — just when it was hot on the charts. That makes sense because, after all, Billboard is, first and foremost, a chart.
As of this writing, there are 19,290 signatures on the petition, which states, “Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without ’Fancy’ as a nominee.”
The petition also claims that Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” would’ve won if Iggy wasn’t nominated, beating out “I Don’t F–k With You” and “Hot N—a.”
