Taste of Africa in Music Meets Runway - African Edition

AFTER four years of offering something different in the country's showbiz industry, the popular fashion and music event, Music Meets Runway (MMR), has become a major part of the country's events calendar, with large followership in Lagos, which is regarded as the entertainment capital of Nigeria.

But in what seems like a deliberate effort to further localize the concept, Le Reve Events, promoter of the show, has announced that the 2014 edition will be The African Edition, which has led to the re-branding from Music Meets Runway (MMR) to Music Meets Runway Africa (MMRA).

Known for providing a platform for the most creative designers to showcase their latest collections, accompanied by live performances from popular musical acts, Music Meets Runway is a yearly event aimed at celebration of both music and fashion on one stage. Like the name goes, it's a meeting point for latest fashion designs and latest music hits.
For instance, last year's Icon edition featured four of the most outstanding designers in Nigeria today. They include Ituen Basi, Mai Atafo, Lanre Da Silver Ajayi & Deola Sagoe. Aside the runway display, the audience was thrilled with Performances by Tuface, D'banj, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, Lola Rae and the legends such as Dr Victor Olaiya & Femi Kuti. International fashion designer and fashion Icon Angela Simmons hosted the event alongside Nigeria's Ik Osakidowa, while supermodel Alek Wek also thrilled guests, as she strutted down the MMR runway and presented Deola Sagoe with the Icon of The Icons Award.

Year after year, the brand brand has continued to raise the bar in the entertainment industry and it is no surprise that news of its' success has spread to other African countries such as South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and others.
In line with the tradition of the show, this year's package has been appropriately themed The African Edition, with the aim to spotlight excellence in arts and craftsmanship by celebrating the diversity of African artisans and showcasing various unique and authentic creations from trailblazers in the African society today. MMR 2014 promises to be an experience like no other, putting the best of African music and fashion together on one stage in Lagos, Nigeria.
Already endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism, the initiative will promote tourism in Nigeria by bringing Africa to Nigeria. Billed for December 23, 2014, at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Iasland, Lagos, organiser will be making tickets for the event available at 20% discount till Sunday November 30, 2014.
The Music Meets Runway Foundation was established in 2011 to support and empower emerging talent across the arts, at critical stages in their creative lives. The mission is to use music and fashion to educate, motivate, inspire and change lives by providing assistance to the youth.
By either supporting their growing business or by bringing Arts & Crafts into their educational system, thereby creating jobs, the brand has been able to leverage our love for fashion and music to provide opportunities for philanthropic growth.
Speaking on the project, Jennifer Olize, the CEO of MMR said, "last year, the MMR Foundation through the help of sponsor; Sovereign Trust Insurance, was able to reaffirm its commitment to empowering emerging talents by awarding a 3 Million Naira grant to Olakunbi Oyelese, creative director of Nigerian fashion label; April by Kunbi at MMR 2013. This year, the MMR Foundation continues on the journey to find and showcase the best of African Fashion as we embark on a rigorous search for one designer, who will join the ranks of Kunbi Oyelese as MMR Rising Icons," she hinted.
